About Me
My philosophy of care is rooted in the belief that every patient deserves immediate, high-quality treatment regardless of their ability to pay. As an emergency medicine clinician, educator, and researcher at 好色tv Langone, I am passionate about addressing acute medical conditions while also tackling the social challenges that impact health. I find immense fulfillment in helping patients navigate emergencies and advocating for systemic improvements through empirical research.
I specialize in emergency medicine, with a focus on critical organ donor shortages and improving resuscitation outcomes. My research aims to maximize lives saved by enhancing resuscitation techniques and increasing organ donation opportunities when resuscitation is unsuccessful or not in accordance with individuals鈥 wishes. I am dedicated to proactive engagement with NYC communities and clinical stakeholders to explore the clinical safety and ethical acceptability of recovering lungs from potential donors who die unexpectedly in the emergency department.
Throughout my career, I have led numerous research initiatives, including two R01 grants from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) aimed at improving organ donation registration among vulnerable communities. My work has also extended to producing educational videos in partnership with Black- and Latinx-owned barbershops and beauty salons in NYC to encourage organ donation registration. Additionally, I conduct epidemiological studies to understand behaviors leading to injury among pedestrians, bicyclists, and micromobility users, contributing to infrastructure improvements and policies that reduce roadway injuries.
My journey into emergency medicine began with a desire to make a tangible difference in acute care settings. I have collaborated with bioethicists, clinical experts, and researchers from various disciplines, both within and outside academic medical centers. My work has garnered international recognition, leading to my participation in NIH grant review panels and working groups. I am honored to have my research covered by major news outlets such as NPR, NBC, and The Atlantic, and I am committed to continuing my efforts to improve patient care and health outcomes.

Research Summary
I am an emergency medicine clinician, educator, and researcher. I selected a career in emergency medicine because it is where patients are treated for acute medical conditions regardless of their ability to pay for care. In this setting, we also assist our patients individually and collectively who experience social challenges affecting health through empirical research and advocacy.
Among these challenges, I have spent my career addressing critical organ donor shortages in the U.S. The primary goal of my research is to maximize lives saved through improving resuscitation with good neurological outcomes and increasing organ donation opportunities when resuscitation is unsuccessful, clinically inappropriate, or not in accordance with individuals鈥 wishes. Using proactive engagement with NYC communities and clinical stakeholders, I am exploring the clinical safety and ethical acceptability of recovering lungs from potential donors who die unexpectedly in the emergency department (R33HL156890 鈥 PIs Wall & Montgomery). Previously, I was the Principal Investigator for two R01 grants from NIDDK (R01DK099639 & RO1DK098610) to improve organ donation registration among vulnerable communities least likely to register despite having proportionally among the greatest need for kidney transplants. To encourage registration, we produced edutainment videos in partnership with clients and owners of Black and Latinx owned barbershops and beauty salons in NYC.
As a secondary research focus, I conduct epidemiological studies to understand behaviors leading to injury among pedestrians, bicyclists, and micromobility users who navigate NYC streets. Our research led to infrastructure improvements and policies that have reduced roadway associated injuries requiring care in the emergency department. All of my research involves cross-disciplinary collaborations with bioethicists, clinical experts from medicine, surgery, emergency medicine, and transplantation, both within and external to hospitals and academic medical centers.
My international recognition in organ donation and injury research led to my serving on various NIH grant review panels and working groups. My research was covered in news media including NPR, NBC, and the Atlantic.
