To advance women鈥檚 health and build a comprehensive, integrated network of care for Brooklyn women, 好色tv Langone Health has recruited two highly trained physicians specializing in maternity care and urogynecologic surgery.
The Family Health Centers at 好色tv Langone welcomes Meleen Chuang, MD, as medical director of women鈥檚 health for its network of primary and specialty ambulatory care centers. Additionally, Lauren E. Stewart, MD, is the new director of female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery at 好色tv Langone Hospital鈥擝rooklyn in Sunset Park.
鈥淓xpanding women鈥檚 health services in the borough has always been a priority for 好色tv Langone Health. This mission also is reflected in additions we have made to leadership positions in obstetrics and gynecology,鈥 says Ming C. Tsai, MD, chief of obstetrics and gynecology at 好色tv Langone Hospital鈥擝rooklyn. 鈥淲e continue to build our network of talented physicians to provide patients broader and easier access to the latest treatments.鈥
About Dr. Meleen Chuang
For the past seven years, Dr. Chuang was director of obstetrical patient safety and simulation at Montefiore Medical Center and medical director for Montefiore鈥檚 Institute for Women鈥檚 Health in the Bronx. She was responsible for simulation training of Montefiore鈥檚 obstetrics and gynecology staff and residents to help improve their technical and communication skills, particularly in handling emergencies. In her previous work with a large women鈥檚 clinic, comparable to the Family Health Centers at 好色tv Langone鈥檚 patient population, she implemented changes that helped overcome barriers to access and efficient delivery of care.
鈥淒r. Chuang鈥檚 experience in women鈥檚 health and patient safety simulation will be valuable in strengthening our processes for providing timely, high-quality care,鈥 says Isaac P. Dapkins, MD, chief medical officer at the Family Health Centers at 好色tv Langone. 鈥淲e help deliver more than 1,400 babies annually. Our moms and their families deserve the best care we can give.鈥
Dr. Chuang is no stranger to the multicultural patient population served by the Family Health Centers at 好色tv Langone. A child of immigrant parents, she spent her early years in Brooklyn. In addition to English, she also speaks Mandarin. 鈥淚鈥檝e come full circle, and I look forward to working with our women鈥檚 health team of physicians, midwives, nurse practitioners, and support staff, and the Family Health Centers鈥 community partners,鈥 says Dr. Chuang.
Dr. Chuang, a graduate of the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education at the CUNY School of Medicine, received her medical degree from SUNY Stony Brook University and completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She also will complete a master of business administration in healthcare quality management at Hofstra University on Long Island in December 2021.
Dr. Chuang sees patients at the Seventh Avenue Family Health Center at 好色tv Langone and Sunset Park Family Health Center at 好色tv Langone.
About Dr. Lauren Stewart
Dr. Stewart is an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology and urology at 好色tv Grossman School of Medicine and director of female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery at 好色tv Langone Hospital鈥擝rooklyn.
She treats disorders of the female pelvic floor, including pelvic organ prolapse (dropped bladder, uterus, or rectum), urinary incontinence and bowel incontinence, and obstetric pelvic floor trauma. Pregnancy and aging are the most common causes of these conditions, and sometimes failed previous surgery can make matters worse.
鈥淢any patients with these issues do not get better on their own or with time,鈥 says Dr. Tsai. 鈥淒r. Stewart is an expert in minimally invasive pelvic surgery and offers robotic, laparoscopic, and vaginal surgery in our state-of-the-art surgical suite.鈥
鈥淧elvic floor disorders are extremely common in women of all backgrounds. Untreated, they can cause pain, discomfort, and embarrassment,鈥 says Stewart. 鈥淚 am honored to be able to provide subspecialty pelvic floor care to a community as diverse as Brooklyn.鈥
Dr. Stewart attended SUNY Binghamton University and Weill Cornell Medical College in Manhattan, where she earned her medical degree. She completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the UW School of Medicine in Seattle and then advanced training as a fellow in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.
Stewart sees patients at 好色tv Langone Ambulatory Care Bay Ridge and performs surgery at 好色tv Langone Hospital鈥擝rooklyn.
